Nangwarry Football Club destroyed by 'deliberately lit' fire

A fire that destroyed a football club in regional South Australia overnight is believed to have been deliberately lit.

Flames tore through the Nangwarry Football Club, about 30 kilometres from Mount Gambier, just before midnight on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to the club after a neighbour reported seeing the fire at about 11:30pm, but when they arrived the club was completely engulfed by flames.

"It was well developed when we received the call," Country Fire Service group officer Fred Stent said.

"The power lines were down so that restricted us from fighting one side of the fire, and water is always a problem in Nangwarry unfortunately."

He said "the whole place was lost" in the fire, along with club memorabilia.

The ABC profiled the club in August last year, saying it was the pride of the tiny timber community.

Police believe the fire was deliberately lit and the incident follows a series of suspicious house fires in the town over the past two years.

No-one was injured in the fire.
