Nang dealer feared 'last day on planet'

A teenager who boasted of making a "nang" delivery driver fear it was his "last day on planet earth" after carjacking him at knifepoint has been jailed for at least three years.

Beau Buckley, 18, and an accomplice ordered $300 worth of small nitrous oxide canisters, nicknamed "nangs", to be dropped off at Hillside, in Melbourne's northwest, in March.

When the 25-year-old delivery man arrived just before 5am and requested payment, Buckley pretended to search for his wallet before pulling out a 10cm folding knife.

As his co-offender pulled out a 30cm blade, Buckley told the dealer to hand over his car keys or get hurt.

In a group chat recovered by police, Buckley later told friends the driver "thought it was the last time he would see planet earth".

The victim said he had suffered from panic attacks, fear, anxiety and insomnia since the robbery and had also considered leaving Australia.

Buckley on Wednesday faced the Victorian County Court, where Judge Pardeep Tiwana sentenced him to a total of three years and six months in prison.

"Thankfully no actual force was applied, but one can easily comprehend the fear the victim would have felt in circumstances where he was isolated in a dark street with two knives pointed at his direction," Judge Tiwana said.

Buckley, who once represented Australia at a youth baseball competition in Japan, must serve at least three years before being eligible for parole.

The 18-year-old had pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated carjacking and earlier apologised to the court for his actions.

"I am so deeply remorseful to the victim, the community and my family," Buckley said in a statement.

"I have failed both of my parents."
