Nando's to fully reopen on Saturday after closing 50 branches due to food shortage

Nando's says all its restaurants will be open again from this weekend, after dozens of branches had to shut due to a food shortage.

The restaurant chain, known for its spicy per-peri chicken, closed around 50 of its outlets this week, with many others having reduced opening hours, due to a lack ingredients.

Nando's said the problem was mostly due to staff shortages with its suppliers.

It has since also cancelled some of its delivery options, saying many branches don't have enough ingredients to full meals.

But now Nando's says that all its restaurants should be open as normal from this weekend onwards.

A Nando's spokesperson told The Mirror: "The UK food industry has been experiencing disruption across its supply chain in recent weeks due to staff shortages and Covid isolations, and a number of our restaurants have been impacted.

"It is our intention to have all of our restaurants up and trading again from this Saturday, as a result of the hard work behind the scenes, and we look forward to welcoming our customers back to enjoy their favourite peri-peri chicken."

The closures affected branches like this one in Manchester (PA)

The closures are also due to the number of Nando's staff having to self-isolate due to the pandemic, the chain said on Twitter.

Nando's said it had sent 70 of its employees to its suppliers' factories to help restore the normal delivery levels and reopen the affected restaurants.

The chain said delivery schedules meant the situation was changing rapidly and suggested customers check the website before they visit.

When The Mirror checked, we found the following Nando's stores are currently shut:

  • Leicester
  • Dudley
  • Hornchurch, Essex
  • Basildon, Essex
  • Sevenoaks, Kent
  • Chiswick, London
  • Bethnal Green, London
  • Park Royal, London
  • Kensington, London
  • Hove, East Sussex
  • Swindon, Wiltshire
  • Manchester, Arndale branch
  • Manchester, Oxford Road branch
  • Manchester, White City branch
  • Manchester, The Fort
  • Cardiff, Wales
  • Reading, Friar Street

How to check if your Nando's branch is open

If you want to check if your local Nando's is open, you can look it up on the restaurant's website.

If the branch you're interested in has opening hours listed, it's open - if not then it's shut.

Last week fried chicken restaurant KFC warned customers that there may be food shortages in some of its restaurants following weeks of "disruption".

In a message posted to its Twitter page, the fried chicken chain said customers may find "some items aren’t available" and its packaging "may look different".

KFC hasn’t said what food from its menu may be affected, or how many restaurants may be experiencing shortages.

The fast food chain also hasn’t said specifically what has caused the disruption.

However, food supplies across supermarkets and retailers have been impacted in recent weeks by a shortage of HGV drivers.

The food chain ran out of chicken in 2018 and had to close 600 branches across the UK as a result.

At the time, KFC blamed problems with new delivery firm DHL.
