Nancy Straughan on how to make a woven basket

You will need

25 long strips of paper, which are 15cm wide, (you could use wrapping or packing paper)

Sewing machine

Glue

Paperclips

1. Begin folding the paper strips. Longer strips make a taller basket. Fold each strip in half lengthways, and then in half again. Strips should feel sturdy but not so stiff they won’t bend into a basket.

2. Sew along both long edges of strips to secure, or you could glue instead.

3. Weave 6 to 8 strips together to create a criss-cross shape. You have a woven square forming a base, loose strips go up the sides.

4. Fold, then weave the four groups of strips up at a right angle. The first round is awkward – it helps to temporarily hold the strips with paperclips. Glue the strips down to keep them in place.

5. Continue creating rounds, moving paperclips up as you work. You can make your basket shallow or as tall as you like.

6. To finish basket, fold strips inside and glue down.
