Nancy Pelosi on impeaching Donald Trump: He’s just not worth it

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she is not for working to impeach Donald Trump, saying he is “just not worth it”.

She said unless something “overwhelming and bipartisan” is found it would not be right to attempt to remove the president from office.

Mrs Pelosi’s remarks are a departure from her previous comments on the issue.

The Democrat had earlier said the party was waiting on special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation findings before considering impeachment.

But she told the Washington Post on Monday: “Unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don't think we should go down that path, because it divides the country.”

House Democrats are pursuing their own broad, high-profile investigations that will keep the focus on Trump's business dealings and relationship with Russia, exerting congressional oversight without having to broach the I-word.

The move came as it was suggested Mr Mueller’s probe may not be decisive and because his investigation is more narrowly focused

Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings said he agrees with Pelosi and Congress needs "to do our homework."

He said impeachment "has to be a bipartisan effort, and right now it's not there."

"I get the impression this matter will only be resolved at the polls," Mr Cummings said.
