Nancy Guthrie update: Detailed timeline, $50K reward and "imposter" ransom arrest

Law enforcement officials on Thursday provided an updated timeline and new information on the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of "Today" show co-host Savannah Guthrie.

Why it matters: The highly unusual disappearance, which local law enforcement has said it is investigating as a kidnapping or abduction, has captivated the nation.

The latest: Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at a press conference on Thursday that there's still no suspect or person of interest, but released new details about the timeline of Nancy Guthrie's disappearance and addressed rumors circuiting on social media.

  • The FBI is now jointly handling the case with the sheriff's department and the federal agency is offering a $50,000 reward.
  • Law enforcement is aware of multiple ransom notes, including one that has been determined to be sent by an "imposter" who has been arrested, FBI special agent in charge Heith Janke said.
  • It is up to the family whether to engage with any ransom offer, Janke said. The family is eager to communicate but wants to receive proof of life, he said.

Zoom in: Nancy was dropped off by family members at her Catalina Foothills home and her garage door opened at 9:48pm on Sunday, Nanos said.

  • Her video doorbell was disconnected at 1:47am.
  • At 2:12am, the camera detected motion but did not capture video.
  • Guthrie's pacemaker disconnected from her phone at 2:28am.
  • Family members arrived at Guthrie's house to check on her at 11:56am Monday.
  • 9-1-1 was called at 12:03pm.

Between the lines: Other details Nanos and Janke provided include:

  • Blood found on the porch of the home came back as Guthrie's DNA;
  • The vehicle found at the Guthrie home was processed as evidence per standard protocol;
  • The department is not confirming whether there was forced entry.

What they're saying: "Right now we believe Nancy is still out there. We want her home and to find a way to get to the bottom of all of this," Nanos said.

  • He urged the media and public to exercise discretion before sharing unconfirmed information, noting "social media's kind of an ugly world sometimes."

State of play: The update came the day after President Trump announced on Truth Social that he was "directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family's, and Local Law Enforcement's, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY."

  • Also on Wednesday, Savannah Guthrie and her siblings posted an emotional video on Instagram pleading for their 84-year-old mother's safe return.

What's next: Law enforcement is asking the public to continue reporting tips at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
