Nancy Dell'Olio takes swipe at Posh and Cheryl as new WAGs won't be 'distracting'

Nancy Dell'olio made a thinly-veiled dig at Cheryl and Victoria Beckham as she praised the new crop of WAGs.

The starlet was delighted the newcomers won’t be “distracting the players” during the upcoming Euro tournament because they are not "celebrities" themselves.

Back in 2006, when England were competing in the World Cup finals in Germany, Nancy was dating the then-England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Despite gaining a lot of publicity herself, the Italian lawyer objected to all the attention the likes of Victoria Beckham and Cheryl were getting.

The team and their families were in the German spa town of Baden-Baden, where the WAGs were regularly photographed out shopping or partying together.

Nancy told the MailOnline : "The press were not talking about the wives and girlfriends of any other of the teams. I suggested they have to be more careful but they just did whatever they wanted.

"I tried to warn some of them about their behaviour because they were distracting the players. The wives and girlfriends at Baden-Baden went too far and I think the federation changed some rules so it wouldn't happen again.”

Back in 2006, former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham was the reigning queen of the WAGS.

With her fake tan, hair extensions and high heels, Posh was able to show the less well-known WAGS the ropes.

She reportedly took the Girls Aloud singer Cheryl under her wing and the pair were often photographed wearing similar vest tops, skinny jeans or short skirts and towering heels.

Cheryl married Ashley Cole once the tournament was over but their relationship later crumbled in the limelight.

At the time, all eyes were also on WAGs Coleen Rooney and Abbey Clancy during the world cup.

Nancy, who starred in Strictly Come Dancing in 2011, claimed the WAGs were having their "celebrity" moments.

In contrast, she believes the current internationals’ partners don’t capture the limelight in the same way.

Nancy continued: "It's good they're not celebrities. They are contemporary women, more emancipated, they are much more educated. It is a good thing. It's more appropriate."

This time round, the WAGs include: Harry Kane’s wife Katie, Harry Maguire’s fiancée Fern Hawkins and Reece James’ girlfriend Mia McClenaghan.
