Nan 'will never return' to 'scummy and dirty' swimming pool

A nan has vowed not to return to a swimming pool after being left shocked by the cold and dirty conditions she found there.

The woman, who did not want to be named, visited Nye Bevan Pool in Skelmersdale with her granddaughter on Monday and was "appalled" by the "scummy and dirty" pool tiles and damage to the floors, ceiling and equipment.

She promised never to return to the West Lancashire Borough Council-own facility, which is due to be knocked down and replaced with a more modern alternative in the future.

The woman said she could see black tiles around the building as well, while the ceiling is "falling down" and bits could be found in the water. She also said equipment including lockers and dryers were either missing or broken.

Speaking to LancsLive, she added: "The water was extremely cold in the small pool never, [it] used to be so cold. School children were lining up, they were shaking with the cold.

"First thing on a Monday morning you would expect it to be clean. Plus school children are doing there lessons in there, it was appalling. There's no excuse not to keep it clean.

"The seating benches in changing room were covered in dry mud. It took me a few minutes to clean this with baby wipes to make it clean for us to use also. I will not be returning anytime soon, that's for sure. I understand its an old building but cleanliness is a must. Why should we have to travel out of our own town to use facilities we have here in Skelmersdale?"

West Lancashire Borough Council, which owns the facility, has long term ambitions to replace it with a newer building. It was recently unsuccessful in a bid for the Government's Levelling Up Fund which would have been used towards the plan but has said it remains committed.

A West Lancashire Borough Council spokesman said: "We have been in discussion with Serco who operate the pool and they have taken steps to improve their cleaning rota to tackle problem areas. The lockers and cubicles were repaired and brought up to standard in August and Serco will review any issue with these as well as the hairdryers.

"Any concerns can be raised directly with staff at the desk so we can work together with customers to keep facility standards high."
