Nan says Pontins 'should be demolished' after holiday cut short by 'screaming guests'

A nan has called for a holiday park to be demolished after her family trip was cut short due to 'screaming guests' keeping them awake.

Mary French booked to stay at Pontins in Southport for three nights with her son Jamie, 31, daughter-in-law Paige, 28, and her grandchildren, aged six and 16 months old.

But the family, from Birmingham, decided to come home early after they claim they were kept awake for two nights by other guests "screaming and screeching" into the early hours.

Mary claims their chalet was "absolutely filthy" when they first arrived on July 30 and she said she ended up cleaning it herself.

She claims springs were sticking out of the mattress on the bed and that she spotted beard trimmings and nail clippings on a shelf under the mirror.

The nan said in a Facebook group: "In my opinion the only thing this place is fit for is demolition."

Mary told the Liverpool Echo : "Our apartment was absolutely filthy. There are lots of cleaners going around - what they're doing I don't know.

"There was a shelf under the mirror and there were beard trimmings and nail clippings on there."

Mary claims her 16 month old grandson's socks were left covered in dirt after walking around the floor of their chalet for a few minutes.

She said: "I went around with antibacterial spray and a mop and bucket with bleach and water - the water was black, and I mean black, when we finished mopping the floor."

After seeing the 'dirt and grime' on the pots in the kitchen, Mary said her son went out and bought paper plates and cups for them to use instead.

The 62-year-old said she has stayed at caravan parks up and down the country and has previously visited Pontins in Prestatyn, which "was fine 25 years ago."

But writing in a group on Facebook about her stay at Pontins Southport, Mary said: "In my opinion the only thing this place is fit for is demolition."

She said: "We paid £240 for three nights for three adults and two children. I didn't expect it to be the Ritz or anything remotely close to it.

"From the outset I said to my son and daughter-in-law 'we know it's not going to be fantastic but as long as it's clean we can deal with anything else.'

"There was nothing available anywhere else that was reasonably priced. The whole idea was it was just a base, it wasn't going to be anything else. It was a short break after Covid and we can't go abroad."

She claims her chalet was "absolutely filthy", adding: "It was hideous and I'm no snob".

Mary said: "When we first went into the room and saw the state of it we cleaned it and we said 'let's get on with it now - that was our attitude.

"It wasn't so much the filthy apartment as the screaming until 3am. These people were hanging over the balcony screeching and screaming.

"The biggest problem was the lack of consideration from these guests - it is supposed to be a family complex."

The Mirror has contacted Pontins for comment.
