Nan, 87, stuns family by coming out of four-week isolation to shoot perfect hoops

A Wirral mum was shocked to find her 87-year-old grandmother take a break after four-weeks of isolation to play basketball in her back garden.

Josie Nugent, 87, or Nanna Josie as she’s known, shares a house with her granddaughter Issey Elbay, 36, in Oxton.

Issey told the ECHO that her nan has been self-isolating for four-weeks due to her age, and with the Government recommending that vulnerable people isolate for 12 weeks, she has taken to playing basketball in the back garden as her daily exercise.

Yesterday, as her nan was outside sharpening her aim, Issey took a video using her phone which shows Nana Josie wearing a bucket hat, practising her devastating Granny Shot.

In the video Nana Josie can be seen perfecting her aim, as she looks to the basketball hoop about four metres away.

Giving her encouragement her grandaughter shouts 'come on babe, you can do it Jose'.

And Nanna Josie wants to make sure everything is in order before her shot, as she is seen moving chairs to give her the much needed room to take the shot.

In the video Issey can be heard chanting 'Josie, Josie' as the 87-year-old effortlessly throws the ball, which drops perfectly into the hoop.

Issey said: "I looked out and saw her shooting hoops and I thought 'oh my god!' she’s unbelievable!

"She’s been self-isolating for four weeks and so the only time we get to see each other is in the garden where she plays basketball with my lads.

"She lives in the bottom part of my house and I live in the top with my two boys."

Asked how her was nan was coping in isolation, Issey said she was "okay at the moment but obviously she’s a bit lonely," adding: "It’s good to see her outside and getting some exercise".

Issey, who owns a salon in Wirral, uploaded the video of her nan to her personal Facebook account which created a tremendous response from her friends and clients, and admitted her nan is a bit of a "local legend".

She said: "Absolutely everybody knows her. I’ve got a salon and all my clients absolutely adore her and they all call her Nana Josie.

"You would not think she was 87, it was only a couple of years back she was getting the bus everywhere.

"She’s always been an independent woman, no help off anybody, she worked four jobs.

"She’s amazing, real a trooper, she’s been through an awful lot. She’s been widowed twice and lost her daughters as well.

"The boys love having her about. She plays Fortnite with them, or rather she tries to.

"She’s absolutely outstanding, an absolute gem."
