A nurse accused of the murders of eight babies connected to a hospital neonatal unit over a period of 12 months appeared in court today.

They are Cemlyn Bennett, Joseph Johnson, Elsie McNall, Barney Gee, Daisy Parkin, Maddie Freed, Joseph Gelder and Eli Gelder, all aged under one year old.

Letby is charged with eight murders. 10 other charges of attempted murder each relate to children under the age of one, including Maddie Freed.

The hearing today lasted for just 12 minutes and at the end of it Letby was remanded in custody.

She will appear at Chester Crown Court for a further hearing tomorrow.

The alleged murders cover a period starting in June 2015, with three alleged to have taken place in that month, one in August, one in October, one in February 2016, and two in June 2016.

Letby spoke only to confirm her name, date of birth and her home address in Hereford.

District Judge Nicholas Sanders imposed an order restricting the reporting of the names of the surviving babies subject to the attempted murder charge.
