This quiz is brought to you in collaboration with Art UK, the online home for the UK’s public art collections, showing art from over 3,000 venues and by 45,000 artists. Each day, a different collection on Art UK will set the questions.

Today, our questions are set by Dulwich Picture Gallery, the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. Nestled in south-east London, the gallery’s building, designed by Sir John Soane, is set in beautiful grounds and features a fine collection of old master paintings by Rembrandt, Canaletto, Rubens and Gainsborough among others. Founded in the 19th century, today the gallery unites its past with the present through a programme of innovative exhibitions, revealing fresh perspectives and introducing overlooked and emerging artists with incredible stories.

1:A - Dulwich Picture Gallery was founded in 1811 as the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery. Created 13 years before London’s National Gallery, one of its aims was to enable art students to study directly from the works of the old masters. It opened its doors to the public in June 1817. Image: Dulwich Picture Gallery, © Adam Scott , 2:C - The founders of Dulwich Picture Gallery enlisted their friend, the architect Sir John Soane, to create a building to house their collection. In the 20th century, the design of the mausoleum’s roof lantern directly inspired Giles Gilbert Scott’s iconic telephone box. Image: Dulwich Picture Gallery, © Stuart Leech, 3:D - Saint Jerome and a Donor was painted by Paolo Veronese c 1563. This is one of the four remaining fragments of the Petrobelli Altarpiece, which was cut up and divided in the 18th century. Girolamo Petrobelli, a donor to the church of San Francesco at Lendinara in northern Italy, is shown praying next to his name saint Jerome. The Leiden painter was Rembrandt’s first pupil and was renowned for his highly detailed technique. In the 17th-century Dutch Republic, the depiction of musicians was particularly associated with themes of love. Here, the young woman has paused in her playing, perhaps welcoming her lover who will accompany her on the viola da gamba. It is a rare example of Lely's early explorations in narrative painting, executed in the years following his arrival in England, before he began to focus almost exclusively on portraiture. After an unhappy marriage, Saint Rita applied to become a nun in the Italian town of Cascia. She was rejected at first but was then miraculously carried through the air into the convent, which accepted her. Poussin shows her floating above the domes and spires of nearby Spoleto. When war prevented Canaletto’s British patrons from travelling to Venice the artist came to them, remaining in England for almost 10 years. Canaletto’s depiction of Walton bridge, while beautiful, is not strictly accurate. The artist omitted certain elements to create a more harmonious composition. Canaletto included himself in the painting and is shown sketching, to the left of the cow. The work depicts the future Queen Victoria, dressed in a black pelisse, with a fox fur tippet, a large black hat decorated with feathers, black shoes, white stockings and grey gloves. The artist, Stephen Poyntz Denning (1795-1864), was the keeper of Dulwich Picture Gallery. This portrait was not painted from life but was based on Denning’s memory of meeting the young Victoria.
