Name change and £500,000 makeover for popular bar after takeover

A popular Ayrshire pub is subject of a takeover and will receive a £500,000 refurbishment.

R&A Sports Bar in Irvine town centre has been bought by Amber Taverns, who own The Standing Man in Kilmarnock.

The High Street venue will be renamed to The Northern Way and is undergoing the £500,000 refurb as a contemporary community pub, building on the success of the previous independent owners, and it will re-open at the end of this month.

The move is part of a triple takeover from Amber Taverns who are also opening two new pubs in Chester and Durham.

James Baer, chief executive of Amber Taverns, said: “These three new pub openings demonstrate our continued conviction in the Amber model of a well-designed, contemporary pub with broad demographic appeal, which offers a good quality customer experience in a vibrant and comfortable setting at reasonable prices.

“Interestingly, the three freehold properties derive from different sources – one former retail site, a private operator and a large national chain - all of which demonstrate our ability to identify opportunities and carry out good quality refurbishments which enable us to keep growing the business, underpinning the enduring appeal of a high quality, local community pub thriving at the heart of the communities they serve.”

It's understood that the expected re-opening date is Friday, June 30 depending on how works progress.
