Naked and drunk Scot broke both legs sliding down flume after breaking into water park

A naked Scot and his pal drunkenly fractured their feet and legs after breaking into a swimming complex and cascading down a water slide.

Barry Douglas, from Dundee, had to be rescued by emergency services after he and 46-year-old pal Claire Vickers broke into the flumes at night after a day of drinking on August 4

The pair splashed water on the slide so they could generate speed going down together, thinking that they would come out the other side and into the pool, according to a Wales Online.

But the 44-year-old - who was completely naked at the time - broke his leg and shattered both his ankles after colliding with a barrier placed at the exit of the flume.

Claire also broke her leg and shattered every bone in her foot.

Police were initially called to investigate reports of “kids” messing about in the pool at the Aldershot Lido swimming complex in Hampshire.

Appearing on This Morning in wheelchairs and heavily bandaged up, Barry and Claire urged viewers not to make the same mistakes they did.

When asked by Philip Schofield if he decided to skinny dip down the flume Barry, who lives down south, replied, “Yeah, I did, 100%.”

Mum-of-five Claire, from Aldershot, had been to the pub for four hours before meeting up with Barry at his house for some more drinks.

At about 2am, she suggested that the two try breaking into the lido, which was only a five-minute walk away, for a quick dip.

Forklift driver Barry agreed and they crawled under the fence surrounding the swimming pool before leaping in.

Tipsy Claire then suggested that they have a go on the long yellow flume slide.

They climbed over the slide gate and went up the stairs, before Claire sat down and Barry put his legs round her to slide together.

As the water was off, Claire splashed some down the chute from the foot bath to make it extra slippery and to help get some speed.

They raced down but, to their horror, saw that a barrier had been placed at the tube’s exit.

Barry collided with Claire at the bottom of the flume and bounced back off her, before passing out for a couple of hours, leaving Claire fearing that he was dead.

He added: “I was obviously still naked and the water was coming down the flume. I was freezing and passed out.

“We were stuck in there for three and a half hours before the police came to help us.

“The officers saw I was naked and threw my clothes on top of me to try and keep me warm, but they got soaked.”

Speaking to our sister title Wales Online about the incident, he also said: “The pain was unbearable, it was one of the most horrific experience I’ve had in my life.”

"I tried to lift my leg, but it was dark in there I could see my leg just folding.

Eventually, they were rescued by three police officers who had been called by nearby residents reporting that kids had broken into the lido.

Claire kept shouting for help until the officers looked over the top of the slide and saw them trapped behind the barrier at the uncovered portion at the bottom.

They called for paramedics who lifted them up over the side of the slide and into the ambulance.

They were taken to Frimley Park Hospital in Camberley, but their injuries were too severe for treatment there, so they were transferred to St George’s Hospital in Tooting.

Now the pair hope their cautionary tale will dissuade others from doing the same thing.

Barry said: “I’ll be lucky if I ever get to go near a water slide in my life again.

“Even thinking about going past that place gives me nightmares.”

Claire added: “Don’t do it - we’re idiots.

“I still have really bad night terrors about it, in the beginning I was waking up within seconds of going to sleep.

“There should have been gates at the top shutting the whole thing off, there needs to be more safety.”

No police action was taken against either Claire of Barry but details of the incident were provided to the land owner of the Lido by officers who attended.
