Naked rambler spotted in nothing but hat, boots and rucksack roaming Devil's Dyke

Police have responded to reports of a naked hiker wearing nothing but a hat, boots and a rucksack at picturesque beauty spot.

Officers were called to Devil's Dyke near Brighton, East Sussex, on Monday afternoon after a man was spotted having abandoned most of his clothes.

But they were unable to find the starkers walker despite receiving multiple reports from alarmed members of the public enjoying the fresh air in lockdown.

The man spotted at the National Trust's 100m deep valley was reportedly around 50 years old.

Mid Sussex Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Darren Taylor, of Sussex Police, told his 1,800 followers about the search effort.

He tweeted: "Some of the team carried out an area search yesterday, around 4pm due to reports from members of the public that there was a naked man, around 50 years of age, hiking near to Devils Dyke, wearing only a cap, hiking boots and a rucksack! No sign of the male in question though."

The countryside tourist attraction on the South Downs popular with walkers and tourists has been visited in droves during lockdown.

It has many walking routes and the Site of Special Scientific Interest was a much-loved day tripping location during the late 19th and early 20th century.

Last year, a woman was startled when a naked man crossed her path close less than a mile from Devil’s Dyke.

Louise Yates, 57, had been on a stroll with a friend when they came across the bare-bottomed rambler close to Saddlescombe Farm.

“I really didn’t expect to see that,” she said.

“We were chatting away and all of a sudden this guy walked out towards us with no clothes on.

“We saw him, he saw us, and by the time I’d got my camera out he was almost gone.”
