A naked man placed his testicles on a car bonnet before 'bending over' in front of stunned drivers on a busy dual carriageway, shocked witnesses said.
The man, described as in his late 20s, was detained by police at around 4pm in West Derby Road, Tuebrook , close to the KFC restaurant.
The incident caused delays on roads already busy with traffic building up ahead of the Merseyside Derby clash between Liverpool FC and Everton at Anfield this evening.
One witness, who was driving home from work, told the ECHO: "I honestly can't believe I have seen that driving home. I was driving along the stretch by Iceland and he was running along the carriageway.
"I thought he was wearing a beige outfit to be honest. But then he ran out in front of a line of traffic.
"He put his parts on the bonnet of the car next to me. I have never seen anything like it.
"Everyone was beeping, I drove past him and when I looked back, he was bent over with his bottom in the air looking between his legs at the traffic."
The witness said the man looked like he was "high as a kite" on drugs or alcohol.
A passenger on a bus, which was forced to stop for the man, said a crowd of people were stood around taking videos of the incident.
They said: "I just noticed traffic and as we got to him he had a few police holding him by the central reservation. Was a big crowd so I think videos will be doing the rounds."
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said officers were called to reports of a naked male at 4pm.
She said: "Patrols attended and detained the man who has been taken to hospital as a precaution."
The man has not been detained under the Mental Health Act.
