A naked man was found badly injured and tied up on the side of a busy Irish motorway in a horrifying incident on Monday.
Gardai have launched an investigation after the man was discovered alongside the M18 bypass near Athenry in Galway.
The man is believed to have been found with numerous wounds after an assault at around 8am on Monday morning.
Emergency services arrived at the scene and the man was rushed to University Hospital Galway where he is being treated.
Gardai confirmed an investigation into the incident is continuing and they cannot comment any further.
A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Galway are investigating an incident involving a man who was found on a roadside in Athenry at approximately 8am on Monday October 19. The man has been hospitalised for a medical assessment.
"An investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time."
