A man has fled from a Northern Territory home naked after residents caught him allegedly attempting to sexually assault a child near Darwin.

Police have called on the Palmerston community to help find the man following the incident about 2.30pm on Wednesday.

Commander Sachin Sharma said the child was aged between six and 10 years and the attempted assault happened at a home in the suburb of Driver.

"An intruder was disturbed by house occupants while he was attempting to sexually assault a child," he told reporters on Thursday.

"The intruder then left naked from the house."

Officers are searching for a stocky man in his 20s, who is about 150cm tall.

Anyone who has seen the man or has CCTV footage of him should contact police.

"There's nothing we're leaving unturned to get this person who's responsible for this," Comm Sharma said.

"It's definitely very concerning that someone not known as an (alleged) intruder would rock up and engage in that sort of criminal behaviour ... especially when there is a child involved."
