NARITA, Chiba -- The mortal remains of Tetsu Nakamura, who was shot to death last week in eastern Afghanistan, arrived at Narita Airport on Sunday evening, accompanied by family members.

Nakamura, 73, a doctor and a local representative of the nongovernmental organization Peshawar-kai, was shot by an unidentified armed group.

When the coffin was lowered from the airplane, airport officials formed a line and bowed in respect.

The coffin was carried to the front of a VIP lounge at the airport, where his wife, Naoko, 66, and daughter Akiko, 39, observed a silent prayer and mourned for him after laying bouquets.
