'Naive!' - Pundit disagrees with big Chelsea Champions League claim under Frank Lampard

Chelsea have surprised many onlookers this season despite a transfer ban and the 2019/20 campaign being Frank Lampard's first in charge of the club.

The Blues are fourth in the Premier League ahead of the weekend's fixtures and seven points clear of Wolves, who are fifth.

Lampard's men are also in the mix to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. Whilst they are third in Group H, a win against Lille next month will guarantee their safe passage.

And the entertaining 2-2 draw at Valencia in midweek has led to a debate between two former Chelsea men who both have differing opinions on how far the club can go in the Champions League.

"I think we’re capable," former Blues defender Jason Cundy told talkSPORT. "I think we can. Why not? The best team does not always win the Champions League. The last time Chelsea won it, we were average.

"I’m not saying we will, the chances are we probably won’t, but look at Spurs last year. They were going out against Ajax and found a way to win. Yes, they had a world-class striker in Harry Kane, but he didn’t dig them out, Lucas Moura did, and he isn’t world-class.

"You have to be realistic. I know Chelsea are nowhere near the best in Europe, we’re nowhere near the best in this country.

"But you give me any game at any time and ask me, have we got the players to beat a certain team? Yes we do. Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool, over two legs, yes."

Fellow former Chelsea player Tony Cascarino, however, has countered these claims.

"Just listening to what Jason said, I get why Chelsea fans are excited about the team’s attacking flair, they always look like getting goals," he added.

"But I cannot see them winning the Champions League if they defend the way they did last night (Wednesday). This has been a problem since Frank has taken over. He’s got a very young and naive team defensively."
