Nailsea School coronavirus classed as 'outbreak' after second positive test in three days

A North Somerset school has reported a second positive coronavirus case in the space of three days.

Nailsea School, having already taken the decision to isolate students after a positive test this week, has now reported a second confirmed case, this time in a member of staff.

The school confirmed this new coronavirus case is unrelated to the case reported in the same school earlier this week, which saw pupils in year groups 8 and 9 told to self-isolate after a positive test among the student body.

It has also been confirmed that no students or staff will be required to self-isolate as a result of this second confirmed case, with the school saying Public Health England have said it is not required.

A letter sent to parents yesterday (September 18) said the case was brought to the attention of the school's headteacher, Dionne Elliott, shortly before the end of the school day on Friday.

The letter also said the situation at the school was considered as an "outbreak" by Public Health England, but that this term should not "prompt panic or alarm".

The letter said: "The Public Health clinician has advised me that there is no need to isolate students or staff based on the key information related to this situation and the procedures we have in place within the school.

"Given that there have been two positive results at Nailsea School, Public Health England now class this as an 'outbreak'.

"However, the clinician was very clear that this term is one used as two people have experienced the same illness around the same time and place and the term should not prompt panic or alarm within the school community.

"I understand that this additional but unrelated case in school may be concerning for you and your family. However, it was personally reassuring to hear endorsement from Public Health England regarding the safety measures we have in school. These measures have clearly helped to minimise the level of isolation required."
