Nagpur: Metro’s rainwater harvesting fails at some places; will correct them soon, it says

NAGPUR: MahaMetro’s rainwater harvesting system at stations and along the routes seems to have failed at some places and is causing water logging, damage to roads and inconvenience to citizens. Despite directives given by Union minister Nitin Gadkari and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), it has failed to take measures to prevent these problems.

In a video shared with TOI by one Nikunj Dayma, rainwater can be seen falling from Kasturchand Park station and also from the tracks on North Ambazari Road on July 27.

“Rainwater leaks even with a small shower. Motorcyclists face the biggest problem,” he said.

Another citizen Kunal Mourya says the same problem exists on the double-decker flyover on Wardha Road. “Metro should at least release the rainwater into NMC’s storm water drain to prevent damage to roads,” he said.

Subhash Nagar resident Prathmesh Thakre said 15-20 minutes of rain on Saturday caused water logging. “Pipes have been laid to drain out water from the station but it is released on the road. Water remains collected for days together,” he said.

A MahaMetro spokesperson said that it is facing problems in some places for rainwater harvesting and “it will be corrected soon”.

Gadkari held a meeting on July 15 and directed government agencies to ensure no water logging on roads. Municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B then issued letters directing measures be taken accordingly and a report submitted in a fortnight.

As reported by TOI on July 20, MahaMetro was pumping out rainwater accumulated in its new head office building on VIP Road even though harvesting it is mandatory for big buildings.
