AZUMINO, Nagano -- Rice paddy art depicting the sumo wrestler Mitakeumi has been created in Azumino, Nagano Prefecture, the rikishi's home prefecture.

Rice farmers and students from Minamiazumi Agricultural High School created the artwork by planting colored rice stalks in a paddy field near the Azumino Swiss Village roadside rest stop in June. The project was organized by a local tourism association among others.

Admission fees for Azumino Swiss Village's observation deck, from which visitors can appreciate the art in its full splendor, are 300 yen for junior high school students and up, and 100 yen for elementary schoolers. Visitors are expected to be able to enjoy the image until mid-August.

"It's so beautiful," said a visitor from Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture. "Seeing it up close is powerful and moving."
