Naga Munchetty has opened up about her health journey, sharing the difficult and deeply personal decision she made to be sterilised. Joining the likes of Davina McCall, Dawn French, and Naomi Watts, the BBC Breakfast presenter is now adding her voice to the growing list of women speaking out about issues that are so often brushed under the carpet.
Naga, who’s now 50, revealed that she had struggled with incredibly painful periods ever since she was 15, and they weren’t just monthly, but turning up every couple of weeks without any clear medical explanation. It wasn’t until 2022, when she was 48, that she finally got a diagnosis: adenomyosis, a condition where the lining of the womb grows into the muscle wall, reported the Express.
Years earlier, though, Naga had already made up her mind that she didn’t want children. In 2019, she decided to go ahead with sterilisation – a procedure involving keyhole surgery to block or cut the fallopian tubes. She explained: “I knew I didn’t want children and I didn’t want to be reliant on hormones or the regimen of the pill because it didn’t fit with my lifestyle,” adding that she had even been refused the contraceptive injection Depo-Provera. “It felt like it was my only option.”
But during her final check-up before the operation, Naga was hit with a question she wasn’t expecting.
“I was so shocked at the question that I said yes before questioning why it mattered, why would I need my partner’s consent to make a decision about my fertility and health?” she told The Times, describing how the surgeon asked if her husband, television director James Haggar, had agreed to the procedure.
Despite the decision being a mutual one between Naga and James, she admitted that they faced plenty of judgment from others.
“There were even people who said, ‘Oh, they haven’t chosen not to have children, there are fertility problems.’ They just couldn’t accept that we’d chosen not to have children,” Naga recalled.
Now, she’s clear that she owes no one an explanation, simply saying: “It’s none of your bloody business.”
As for her family, even that journey took time. Initially, her mother was upset about the decision, but thankfully, her feelings have evolved. “She says, ‘I’m happy you’re happy,’” Naga shared.
