'Nae mair deep fried pizza' - Scots react to England's Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy

Scottish football fans have given their reaction to England’s Euro 2020 final defeat against Italy last night.

The side’s incredible journey in the tournament came to an end late into Sunday evening after Gareth Southgate’s men lost in a dramatic penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium.

England had been vying to lift their first major trophy since their World Cup win in 1966.

Scots were split on who to support for the occasion - with many opting to back a fellow home nation, while others adopted the friendly ‘Anyone But England’ mentality.

And this was reflected in the responses from Scottish football fans on social media this morning and last night.

One person joked: “Nae mair deep fried pizza, awesome Italy.”

Another said: “Congratulations Italy, that was phenomenal. Sending love from Scotland. Yes sir, Italy can boogie.”

Others suggested that Scotland should be given a new ‘third place’ spot after Steve Clarke’s side were the only other team unbeaten against England in the tournament.

“Scotland went undefeated by England and Italy (if you never play against them, you never lose, am I right or am I right?)”, one person said.

“So basically, we ended up in third place. And what is third if not three ones put together in roman numerals, meaning we were number ones really?”

Another wrote: “Congratulations to Italy, the only team other than Scotland to take anything off England in the Euros.”

A third said: “When it comes down to it, England just aren’t good enough to beat the giants like Scotland and Italy in tournaments.”

But there were many that expressed sympathies with the England team after cameras showed some players in tears following the final penalty.

One wrote: “Heart still breaking this morning for the young England team. Sure they will come back stronger with their fab manager.”

Another said: “I normally don’t watch football, but wanted to say - well done England team. You did so well and were so close. All of you worked so hard to get into the finals and this already is an achievement in itself. It was a very tense game last night. Well done all of you!”

One other commented: “As much as I enjoyed the Italy win last night, I have to admit that I fear it’s not going to be long until this England side does win something.”

Scottish football fans were seen flooding the streets of Glasgow late last night to celebrate Italy’s victory against England.

Dozens were spotted waving Italian flags at the city’s Queen’s Park, while horns were beeped from cars nearby.

Revellers were also seen flocking to George Square in the heart of Glasgow to celebrate after the final whistle.
