Loose Women star Nadia Sawalha has opened up about being diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 60 – a moment that brought both relief and emotion after her own children noticed the signs.
The TV personality was officially diagnosed in 2022 with the condition, which affects around 2.6 million people in the UK. ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) often makes it difficult to concentrate, sit still, or resist impulsive actions – symptoms that Nadia said her family had been noticing for years, according to Surrey Live.
Speaking on Loose Women: The Podcast, Nadia revealed how her children had often picked up on her chaotic behaviour at home. “Total chaos,” she laughed. “Could spend three hours clearing the place up, then turn around and it’s like, ‘How did that happen?’ It’s all upside down.”
She recalled moments when her kids would point out that she wasn’t following through with tasks – something she hadn’t realised herself. “They’d say, ‘Mum, I feel like you’re not properly listening’, because I can’t sit for too long. I’ll get up and do something halfway through them talking.”
Nadia admitted the diagnosis brought tears – but not for the reasons people might think. “When I first got the diagnosis, I cried with relief. They thought I was crying because I was upset, but I was just relieved there was finally a reason for these things.”
While she did have a moment of sadness after receiving the diagnosis, she said her doctors reminded her of her success and achievements. “Now, all these years on, I love my ADHD brain. I don’t reject it, I’m not angry about it.”
She’s not the only Loose Women panellist to be diagnosed with ADHD. Denise Welch also revealed her diagnosis in early 2023, and Nadia said the two share a quiet understanding on set. “You’ll see that with Denise and we know it with each other. I know what’s going on. If you’re not ADHD, then you don’t understand it.”
Since her diagnosis, Nadia said she’s noticed real changes in how she manages day-to-day life. “I can listen better, I don’t miss the middle bit because my brain has gone off.”
Her honesty has resonated with fans, many of whom have faced similar journeys. And her message is clear: if you think you might have symptoms of ADHD, don’t be afraid to speak to your GP. For Nadia, understanding her brain was the beginning of finally feeling at peace with herself.
