Nadia Power breaks her own Irish Indoor 800m record in Poland

Nadia Power smashed her own Irish 800m indoor record this evening at a World Athletics Indoor Tour event in Torun, Poland.

The Dubliner has enjoyed a bright start to 2021 and tonight's result will boost her Olympic qualification hopes.

Power will now return home to train for the European Championships, which take place at the same Polish venue from March 5th-7th.

The 23-year-old recorded a time of 2:00.98 in a third-place finish and broke the 2:02.44 record she set just last month in her first outing of the season. The race was won by Habitam Alemu from Ethiopia with a time of 1:58.19.

Power recently described last year's postponement of the Olympics as a 'blessing in disguise' and has her sights firmly set on Tokyo this summer.

"I was looking at Tokyo as a great added bonus if things were to go well. But now having another year, I’ll be 23, that’s not super-young to go to the Olympics.

"It’s a goal I have to set myself. No excuses with another year, I’ve a great opportunity. I just have to go for it."
