Nacho Novo pays heartfelt tribute to 'best friend' Fernando Ricksen after death

Former Nacho Novo has paid a heartfelt tribute to 'best friend' Fernando Ricksen after his death at 43.

Ricksen passed away this morning after a brave and long fight with motor neurone disease.

The Dutchman lost his six year battle with the disease at a Glasgow hospice in the early hours of this morning.

Calling him a 'role model and friend', Nacho wrote on Instagram: "Sad news my friend, my best friend, a role model, always a fighter.

"Love you to bits mate rip I will see u soon brother."

The pair were team-mates when Rangers won a dramatic 2005 title race on Helicopter Sunday.

And Fernando lifted the trophy as Rangers captain, in what would become one of his proudest moments.

Ricksen was a popular player at Ibrox given his full-blooded commitment and determined approach to the game.

He spent six years in Scotland, and his time with Rangers was eventful as he won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and three League Cups.

The former Dutch international, who picked up a dozen caps for his country, also won the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award alongside John Hartson in 2005.
