Nacho Monreal issues transfer statement as Arsenal chase Kieran Tierney

Nacho Monreal says he has no desire to leave Arsenal amid links with a return to Spain.

Arsenal activated a one-year extension clause in Monreal's contract midway through last season but that has not stopped him from being linked with a move to Real Sociedad.

The Gunners are planning to bolster their options at left-back and are confident that they will complete the signing of Kieran Tierney on Celtic for a fee in excess of £20m, though a second bid was rejected by the Scottish champions over the weekend. However that will not force Monreal to depart.

"That's all rumours," he said. "I belong at Arsenal. I still have a contract.

"My idea is to stay here.

"It's a great club and I feel really comfortable playing for Arsenal. My idea is to continue playing here."

Unai Emery on transfers and doing things the right way

Tierney's eventual arrival will likely force Monreal into a reserve role, with the 33-year-old having struggled with some of the Premier League's swifter wingers in recent seasons.

However Monreal will certainly have his value to Unai Emery, who followed Arsene Wenger's lead by deploying the Spaniard at centre-back on several occasions last season.

"My position has always been left-back, this is the position I enjoy most," Monreal said.

"Football is changing, obviously sometimes our centre-backs have got injured in the last few years and the manager has decided I have to play in that position.

"That's what I did but my position, and where I enjoy playing, is left-back."

Though Arsenal are confident that they will be able to sign Tierney the club have otherwise made heavy weather of a transfer window in which their only other addition has been Gabriel Martinelli, an 18-year-old forward they found in Brazilian state football.

A deal for William Saliba seemed as good as complete but the last minute entry of Tottenham into proceedings has thrown into doubt a transfer that would not have seen the young centre-back join for another 12 months.

In terms of more immediate additions Arsenal want another centre-back, a winger and a central midfielder as well as Tierney. So far progress is slow but Monreal is convinced reinforcements will arrive.

"I trust in the club," he explained. "Obviously a few players decided to retire - Petr Cech, [Stephan] Lichtsteiner - and other players changed.

"That's how it works in football. One day you're here then you're in another place.

"But 100 per cent the club is looking for new players. They will come."
