Naby Keita's cousin in hospital after fatal crash in Guinea leaves several dead

Naby Keita's cousin Almamy Keita is alive and in hospital after a fatal bus crash killed several others in Guinea.

A statement from the Professional Football League of Guinea last night stated nine players from second-division side Etoile de Guinee, who Almamy Keita plays for, were killed in the incident - with Almamy among those dead.

Despite the official statement, the ECHO has since learned Almamy - who was involved in the crash - has been hospitalised and did not die in the crash.

The sports agency who manage Almamy's career, Fella Sport Management, said: "We are happy to announce that Almamy Keita is alive and currently hospitalised.

"He is stable at the moment. No major injury, maybe some head injury but waiting for scan to confirm."

The crash took place outside the city of Mamou, 250 kilometres east of the capital Conakry where Etoile are based.

The team were on their way to play in the city of Kankan, a further 400km east of Mammou, in what was meant to be the first match of the league season.

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita posted on his Instagram after the incident saying: "I am shocked, sad and heartbroken at this terrible news.

"I send my sincere condolences to all families of the victims, as well as the whole sporting family of Guinea.

"Rest in perfect peace guys."

The ECHO has contacted the Professional Football League of Guinea for a statement.
