Naby Keita latest as Liverpool midfielder situation addressed

Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita is on his way back to Merseyside after being allowed to leave Guinea.

Keita was caught up in the political turmoil that has affected his home country in recent days following the ousting of President Alpha Conde.

The coup forced the postponement of Guinea's World Cup qualifier against Morocco in the capital Conakry on Monday.

While the Morocco national team and match officials were allowed to depart the country late on Sunday, land and air borders were otherwise closed meaning Keita remained in Guinea.

Liverpool were reassured the player was safe and stayed in constant contact with the relevant authorities as they attempted to ensure his return to England.

And the situation has now been resolved with Keita and many of his Guinea team-mates jetting out of Conakry international airport on Tuesday and heading back to Europe.

The news will be a relief to Jurgen Klopp, with the Reds boss already facing uncertainty over the availability of a number of midfield options ahead of Sunday's Premier League trip to Leeds United.

James Milner hasn't featured since the opening weekend win over Norwich City, Harvey Elliott withdrew from the England under-21 squad on Monday with a minor muscle problem while Fabinho is waiting to discover if the Brazilian FA will pursue punishment from FIFA after Liverpool refused to release the player for international duty.
