Naby Keita injury boost for Liverpool as Jurgen Klopp addresses Joel Matip, Thiago and Jota

Naby Keita could return for Liverpool as they get set to host Tottenham Hotspur in a top-of-the-table Premier League clash.

The Reds are in the midst of an injury crisis with Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk facing long spells on the sidelines while Kostas Tsimikas, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, Xherdan Shaqiri and Diogo Jota are also unavailable.

In his pre-match press conference Jurgen Klopp explained that none of those seven players were ready to return but said Keita was involved in an extended warm-up during Liverpool's training session on Monday and was set to be assessed in training on Tuesday.

"Naby maybe [back]," Klopp said ahead of the Reds' match with Spurs at Anfield on Wednesday night.

"He was yesterday involved in the extended warming up.

"There is another session today, we will see how he reacts and make a decision. With the others - no. No-one else is back.

"Naby is in the team but he has no rhythm. That is the truth. You play a game and then have only two days between games and you have to make a decision on whether he is ready.

"Whatever you do in the rehabilitation process, you can't replace proper football training, and we don't have a lot of that because of the number of games we have. It makes it difficult.

"Everybody who saw Naby in Midtjylland knows it was not his best moment.

"That's normal and explainable with a lack of rhythm. Now we have to make a little step back with him.

"His injury is not too serious, that's why he is in training again, but we will see. Nobody doubts Naby's qualities.

"When you are injured you need to get lucky in that you don't get another injury and he hasn't had that luck, but we try to be as careful as we can and consider the individual situation of the boys."

The boss also explained he was unsure about the status of Joel Matip after the centre-back was brought off at half-time against Fulham - leaving the Reds with no recognised senior centre-back on the field for the second period.

Klopp said he would again use Tuesday's training session to assess the defender.

"I don't know yet [if Matip will be available]," Klopp added.

"We only played two days ago and he left the pitch with a back spasm.

"The physios work pretty much 24 hours on him, so we will see.

"Today, we have another session and we will see."
