Naby Keita decision confirmed as Africa Cup of Nations uncertainty continues for Liverpool

Naby Keita has been included in Guinea's squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, meaning Liverpool will be without his services in January as a result.

The tournament is currently scheduled to commence in Cameroon on 9 January, with the final set to take place on February 6, though there continue to be mixed reports regarding whether the tournament can go ahead.

There had been suggestions that European clubs would block their players from linking up for the tournament as a result, if it went ahead as scheduled, but Keita has been included in the Guinea squad as Kaba Diawara is the first coach to name his selection.

The Syli National boss has named a 27-man squad for the tournament, with nations allowed to register up to five extra players on top the traditional 23-man limit because of the pandemic.

It has not yet been announced when Liverpool will be expected release Keita, who made his first start since October against Tottenham on Sunday following injury, for international duty, with Guinea's potential progress in the tournament and Covid travels rules also making it unclear as to when the midfielder would return to Anfield and be available for selection once again.

Should Guinea reach the final on February 6, Keita would also likely miss the Reds' potential League Cup two-legged semi-final in January and FA Cup fourth round tie at the start of February if they progress in either competition.

Guinea have been drawn in Group B alongside Senegal, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
