Naby Keita close to signing for next club after Liverpool exit

Naby Keita is on the verge of returning to Germany after leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

Last month Liverpool confirmed that Keita, along with Roberto Firmino, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, would depart the club on a free transfer after his contract expired.

The Guinea international joined the Reds in a £52.75m deal from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2018. But while he won the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup during his five years on Merseyside, Keita did not live up to the lofty expectations that accompanied his arrival from Germany.

And, after being restricted to just five starts this season through injury, it now appears that the 28-year-old is heading back to the Bundelsiga. Bild (via Get German Football News) report he is close to joining Werder Bremen.

It is stated that Keita will undergo a medical next week and is ready to sign a three-year contract with Bremen, who finished 13th in 2022-23 after winning promotion back to the German top-flight.

Keita played played 129 times for Liverpool, scoring 11 goals, and following his departure from the club, issued a statement. He said: "Hello LFC! It has been an outstanding time and experience to play for this very special club! I will always be thankful and proud to have shared so many great moments.

"Wishing good luck to my teammates, coaches and staff for the future and upcoming. I never forget my scouse people. See you soon! Naby Lad."
