Naby Keita and Liverpool in 'constant contact' as playmaker stuck in limbo during attempted Guinea coup

Liverpool state they are in "constant contact" with midfielder Naby Keita after being caught up in the political unrest in his native Guinea.

The English Premier League midfielder was called up for his country to play in their World Cup qualifier against Morocco on Monday, but the game has been postponed due to an attempted political coup.

There are mixed reports on the situation, with Sky stating soldiers in Guinea claim they have dissolved the government of President Alpha Conde and its constitution, as well as closed all land and air borders.

However, the BBC states that it was thwarted by the presidential guard.

It remains unclear if Keita will be able to fly out from his homeland in the coming days with a clash with Leeds United coming up on Sunday.

A Liverpool spokesperson confirmed the club are in contact with Guinea Football Federation and the relevant UK authorities who are dealing with the ongoing developments.

The statement read: "We are in constant contact with Naby and have had regular communication via his national team management.

"We are satisfied that he is safe and well cared for. Obviously the situation is fluid and we will maintain regular dialogue with the relevant authorities as we work to get Naby back to Liverpool in a timely and secure manner."

In a statement, FIFA added: "The current political and security situation in Guinea is quite volatile and is being closely monitored by FIFA and CAF.

“To ensure the safety and security of all players and to protect all match officials, FIFA and CAF have decided to postpone the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifying match Guinea vs. Morocco, which had [been] scheduled to be hosted in Conakry, Guinea, on Monday 6 September.

"Rescheduling information will be made available at a later date.”
