Nabil Fekir speaks out on the failed Liverpool transfer that ended Arsenal and Chelsea hopes

Real Betis playmaker Nabil Fekir has dismissed claims that his move to Liverpool in 2018 broke down over a failed medical.

Images were leaked after the transfer broke down showing the Frenchman in the club's colours in what appeared to be a filming session to prepare for his announcement.

At the time, Arsenal and Chelsea had been mentioned among a number of clubs liked with the then Lyon player, and the prospect of losing out on Fekir to the Reds caused consternation among their fans.

However, the 26-year-old remained in Ligue 1 only to move to Real Betis this summer to replace Giovani Lo Celso as he left Seville to join Tottenham Hotspur.

In the season prior to his potential move to Liverpool, Fekir scored 18 goals and set up eight assists in 30 league games for Lyon, putting him near the top of fan wish lists in the summer transfer window of 2018.

He went on to be a part of the France squad that lifted the World Cup that same summer, but not before the drama of his incomplete move to Anfield.

"What was said is not the truth," said Fekir in an interview with L'Equipe , translated by the Independent .

"My knee is good. I had a quick medical check at Clairefontaine. My knee wasn't even mentioned.

“You want the truth? Even I don’t know, I promise you! I did my medical and then [Liverpool] decided not to sign me.

"At some point they wanted to have me believe it was because of my knee, but an excuse needed to be found."

Fekir's side of events do not tally up with the explanation of his former agent, Jean-Pierres Bernes, who blamed false representatives as the reason for the transfer's failure, on top of a knee problem found in the medical.
