N.L. reports three more COVID-19 deaths; total number doubles in less than a month

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Health officials in Newfoundland and Labrador are today reporting four new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the province's total number of fatalities since the pandemic first began to 38.

Half of those have occurred since Dec. 31, which means the number of COVID-related deaths in the province has doubled in less than a month.

Public health officials have not disclosed whether any of the recent deaths have occurred in long-term care facilities.

Officials said in a news release the number of COVID-19 hospitalizations has held steady at 20 since Tuesday.

The province reported 378 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 today, though the figure does include those who may have contracted the disease but do not qualify for PCR testing to confirm their infection.

Officials say there are 2,510 active infections in the province, and 18 per cent of PCR tests completed since Wednesday have yielded a positive result.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 27, 2022.
