N'Golo Kante's key role in Mason Mount and Ross Barkley's Chelsea midfield success vs Watford

N'Golo Kante has been in excellent form for Chelsea since the Premier League restart.

A stop-start season for the player through injury, the French international has really kicked on in the last five games and played a major role in the team's good form.

That was evident on Saturday evening as he did the dirty work to allow midfield partners Ross Barkley and Mason Mount to have a big influence on the match.

The former was excellent as he teed up Olivier Giroud's goal before netting a late strike, with the latter very impressive in the middle of the park with his energy.

Frank Lampard on Emerson and transfers

Frank Lampard may have found his first-choice midfield in the trio and Mount heaped praise on Kante's performance when assessing the comfortable victory.

"When you’ve got N’Golo behind you, so solid and covers everywhere, you don’t need to worry too much about getting back and defending because he’s always there. That’s a massive help," Mount told Chelsea's official website.

"All me and Ross try and do is link the play up, get in the box and try and score goals and create chances. That’s our job when we’re in the team, and it worked well."

Mount and Barkley teamed up for the first goal after the former Everton man collected his fizzed pass before teeing up Giroud.

It was the breakthrough Lampard's men needed with the Hornets making it hard for them due to the way Nigel Pearson set his side up.

"They started off with two blocks of four, making it difficult for us to break them down and get chances, so that kind of through pass you have to punch it in, because if you don’t it’s going to get intercepted," explained the England international.

"I tried to disguise it a bit, I saw him in the pocket and I just tried to wrap it in. It was a good touch [from Barkley], good through ball, and it was good timing from Oli [Giroud] and a good finish.

"It’s down to us to perform. We were in a good position before West Ham but we lost, and that’s kind of how our season has gone.

"We have bounced back from defeats. We can get the wins when the pressure’s on and we need to get as many three points as we can."
