Mysuru: Special vaccination drive in villages along Kerala border

MYSURU: The Mysuru district administration has launched an aggressive vaccination drive in villages bordering Kerala. The idea is to protect villagers, mostly those who belong to tribal families, from getting infected as Kerala is witnessing a spike in cases.

The health department is organizing a special vaccination drive in these villages to ensure that no one is left out.

As per the plan, health workers are visiting deep inside forest areas and convincing people to take the jabs as it is the only way to protect them from getting infected. The drive is being carried out in border villages like Anemala, Macchoru, Balle haddi, Golur haadi, Bavali, Ellahalli.

“We launched this drive on Wednesday and vaccinated 500 people on Wednesday. Today, we administered vaccines to 800 people. We are using tribal leaders to convince the community to take the jab,” said HD Kote taluk health officer (THO) Dr Ravi Kumar.

“There are 12 villages bordering Kerala. Half of them are tribal hamlets. The vaccine hesitancy among the tribal population has reduced now,” he said.

“Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement in Saragur is also extending help to us in this special drive by providing vehicles, manpower, etc,” he said.

Mysuru DC Bagadi Gautham said the reason for the special drive is the spike in cases in Kerala.

Meanwhile, according to the district war room data, vaccination coverage (I dose) crossed the 90% mark in two taluks in the district. While it is 90.41% in KR Nagar and it is 90.4% in Mysuru rural taluk. When it comes to the second dose, the highest progress was reported from Mysuru urban where 60.11% of the targeted has been jabbed twice. Further 86.04% of the population has received the first dose in Mysuru urban.

According to the district war room data, out of the 8,80,107 targeted population, 7,31,721 (83.14%) people have got the first dose while 3,67,475 (50.22%) people have received the second dose.
