Mysuru: Protest demanding rollback of GST on essential commodities

MYSURU: Activists of the various outfits, including organisations committed to the preserveation and promotion of Kannada, on Tuesday warned the central government of launching a ‘Jan Andolana’ campaign if the Goods and Services Tax (GST) levied on essential commodities was not withdrawn.

The activists gathered in front of the Mysuru deputy commissioner’s office, and condemned the decision of the Centre to levy GST on rice, wheat, curd, salt, jaggery — the policy came into force on Monday.

They pointed out that the people of the country were already reeling under inflation, not to mention the hardships they were plunged in following the outbreak of Covid-19. Under such circumstances, it was disastrous to levy tax on salt and food products, the protesters said.

They pointed out that, regardless of political affiliation, those in power had always compounded the woes of the public.
