Mystery surrounds 'massive bang' heard across Merseyside

A mysterious "explosion" was heard across parts of Merseyside this morning as people reported hearing a loud bang.

Residents living in Wirral were left startled by the noise at around 10am on Wednesday, which is said to have shaken houses in some places.

The explosion was reported in areas including New Brighton, Birkenhead, Leasowe and Seacombe, with people taking to social media to question what it could be.

The ECHO has so far been unable to find any explanation for the reports.

A number of theories have been shared on social media but the cause currently remains a mystery.

One man suggested the bang may have come from a scrapyard in New Brighton, while others suggested the sound had travelled over the water from the docks.

One woman wrote: "Wow my house shook! I was worried something fell in the roof space and I'd have a massive repair bill. So glad others heard it too."

Another said: "Yeah. I live by the tower grounds. My whole house shook and the door rattled . Probably something from the docks."

A third wrote: "Yes the whole building shook in Birkenhead, there was a massive bang too."

Another added: "Yes, very loud bang near the river in Seacombe."
