Mystery surrounds loud bang with 'flash of orange light' as 'explosion' caught on camera

Mystery surrounds a loud bang which boomed out across parts of Greater Manchester on Sunday night.

Residents in the Audenshaw, Denton, Dukinfield areas of Tameside reported hearing the noise with some also saying they saw a flash of orange light.

CCTV footage from an address in Denton captured the deafening noise at 9.53pm but no one seems to know what caused the sound, Manchester Evening News reports.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said they weren't aware of any incidents in the area which would explain the noise.

Denise Ward, a ward councillor for Denton North East, said she was looking into what caused the noise.

She said: "We are aware of it but we aren't sure what it was.

"I heard it then some of my neighbours knocked on and were asking.

"I suppose it could have been anything, it could have been fireworks.

"But we are putting in some enquiries to see what we can find out."

Sammi Gee, 21, who lives in Audenshaw likened the bang to "some kind of explosion".

"It was a massive bang" she said.

"But there was also like an orange light that kind of flashed in the sky which I saw through my window.

"I live near some allotments and it sounded as if it came from that direction but we looked out and couldn't see any signs of fire or anything.

"My whole street came out to investigate as everyone heard it and wanted to know what it was.

"It was definitely louder than fireworks. It sounded closer to what I imagine an explosion would sound like.

"There is an industrial estate just past the allotments so I suppose it could have been something on there."

There were also dozens of reports about the bang on social media with some describing it as sounding like a sonic boom.

One Twitter user tweeted Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham asking: "Anybody know what these loud bangs are what plenty of people are hearing around Guide Bridge and Audenshaw tonight?"

Another said just after 10pm: "Did anyone in #tameside hear a bang? About 10 minutes ago? Don’t think it was a firework......"
