Mystery surrounds huge clouds of 'dive bombing' flies in Merseyside

Swarms of horseflies buzzing around one part of Merseyside are making residents' lives a misery.

People living around Gloucester Road in Bootle have bemoaned not being able to open their windows, as well as being left 'covered in bites'.

One woman said: "[They] are everywhere, it's driving me mad. Boiling hot and I can't open my windows and I daren't cook anything either.

"I've been bitten and so have the kids."

Gill Duvall added: "And they have attitude, they just dive bomb at you they don't care."

Michael Brennan said: "The constant flytipping doesn't help."

A few people believe the flies are buzzing in from the docks, but Peel Ports, which operates the Port of Liverpool, said it was not aware of a problem with horseflies in the area.

Their spokesman said “The port is a secure, safe facility that follows all the relevant standards for cargo handling.

"There’s no evidence that there’s an issue at the docks and we’ve not received any enquiries. If anyone has a specific concern and can provide us with details then we would be happy to look into it.”

A number of people have complained to Sefton Council .

A spokesman for the local authority said: "We have received a small number of complaints regarding flies in south Sefton and our Environmental Health officers are looking into the matter.

"The recent warm weather and flytipping could be contributing factors and people are asked to dispose of their waste correctly and put their rubbish out on their set collection day."
