Mystery surrounds future of Bristol city centre bar as its doors remain closed

A bar in Bristol city centre appears to have an uncertain future, after a different hospitality group submitted plans to open its latest venue in the building it occupies.

The Bristologist was opened in 2014 by James Sleeman, who wanted to bring a 'fun and entertaining' venue for eating and drinking to the city centre.

But the Corn Street cocktail bar is currently closed, with nearby workers saying they 'haven't seen it open in ages'.

When a Bristol Live photographer visited on Tuesday afternoon (August 17), they found it was shut despite Google saying it was open.

Not only this but London company DC Bars Ltd has submitted a licence application to open a Dirty Martini cocktail bar at 45-47 Corn Street. The Bristologist is located at 47 Corn Street.

Bristol Live contacted The Bristologist on Monday afternoon to ask if it was still serving but had not had a response at the time of publication on Thursday (August 19).

The last time The Bristologist posted on its social media pages was in July 2020, when it informed its followers it had reduced its operating hours.

Would-be guests are still able to enquire about making bookings on the venue's website, however.

Once they have done so, an automated message which reads “we will get back to you shortly” is sent to them by email, but the booking is never confirmed.

The Birstologist was shortlisted in the 'best bar' category at the inaugural Bristol Love Awards 2019, losing out to Mother's Ruin.
