Mystery surrounds discovery of Dublin man's body with long garda investigation underway

Mystery still surrounds the discovery of a man's body in Dublin this year.

A new RTE Prime Time Investigation found that there are a total of 22 unidentified bodies in cemeteries and morgues across Ireland.

Of these, 18 are men and four are women from nine counties who remain without identification, some for many years.

Two of those bodies were found this year alone, a woman whose skeletal remains were discovered in Cork and a man found dead in Dublin.

Wexford has the largest number of unidentified cases with six unknown people buried there, Clare has five with the rest coming in the capital, Cork, Galway, Wicklow, Sligo, Leitrim and Meath.

Prime Time added that while they established just 22 unidentified bodies, it is understood that the number could be much higher.

Last year, the remains of a body found in Rathmines were identified as those of a Dublin man who had been missing since 2011.

Stephen Corrigan, who was a resident in the Cork Street area of the south inner city, was identified thanks to a DNA sample from his mother.

Mr Corrigan, who would have been in his late 50s, was a patient at The Weir Home, Cork Street and failed to return there on November 22 2011.

Sadly his mother had since passed away, along with Stephen's only other known blood relative with gardai still appealing for anyone who knew him to come forward.
