Mystery surrounding purple water in Tollcross Park continues as officials struggle to find cause

Investigations into why a river in Glasgow's east end turned purple are still ongoing.

Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) and Scottish Water are looking into why the water in Tollcross Park suddenly turned bright purple on Friday but have so far drawn a blank.

SEPA has confirmed that it's officers were also out at the site on Wednesday, after reports that it had turned 'inky black'.

While the black water eventually stopped, it went on to turn purple just days later.

As previously reported by Glasgow Live, members of the public were left baffled by the bright purple stream.

The cause of the discolouring still remains a mystery, despite ongoing investigations.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issue and we are working to establish the circumstances which led to the discolouration in Tollcross Burn. We are liaising with SEPA.”

Officers from SEPA are continuing to try and trace the cause of the purple water.

A spokesperson added: "Every day SEPA works to protect and enhance Scotland’s environment and takes all reports of pollution seriously.

“On Wednesday, August 19, SEPA received reports that water in Tollcross Burn was an inky black colour.

“Our officers are investigating and understand that the discolouration had ceased, until receiving reports of a purple hue in the same watercourse on Friday August, 21. This discolouration has also ceased and no further reports were received over the weekend.

“SEPA is working to identify the source of the discolouration and is liaising with Scottish Water, which is also investigating the matter.

“Anyone who is concerned about a potential pollution incident can report this via  www.sepa.org.uk/report.”
