The 10 storey Wirral building which has been boarded up for four years

Mystery surrounds the redevelopment of a high-rise block of flats in Wirral.

Charter House, which is located on the land between Church Street and Union Street in Egremont, Wallasey, remains boarded up four years after it was bought by Camco Estates from Magenta Living.

But now the company has gone into receivership - a process of trying to recoup money for the company's creditors - the future of the 10-storey redevelopment remains unclear.

The building was owned by Wirral-based housing association Magenta Living, formerly Wirral Partnership Homes (WPH).

The building became a financial burden to the social housing provider and they faced costs of £123,000 per flat for renovation work.

Instead, it was closed and Magenta sought planning permission to demolish the building in 2016 before it was sold to Camco.

Back in 2017, Camco Estates renamed the flats as the Union Building, promising a “sensitive” refurbishment “respecting the original design intent, whilst at the same time bringing the building into the 21st century”.

By May 2018, everything appeared to be on track as the refurb continued and took into account the lessons learned from the tragic Grenfell Tower fire regarding upgrades to ensure it was safe.

Camco Estates had said at the time that the development, which was going to offer 42 two-bed apartments, would be finished by June 2018 with residents moving in shortly after.

But after the £4m spend on the project, it remains empty, behind huge black hoardings and its future is still uncertain.

According to documents filed to Companies House - the government's register of companies operating in the UK - director Arthur Morgan stepped down in October last year.

Companies House also states Camco Estates' affairs were being handled by receivers from GVA Grimley - now part of Avison Young. Avison Young have been approached for comment.
