Mystery over big bang 'like an explosion' heard across Nottingham

A mysterious loud 'bang' which 'sounded like an explosion' has got people in a Nottingham village speculating about where it may have come from. A Facebook post, which went up yesterday (Wednesday, January 18), on a Clifton community page asked if anyone had heard a "massive bang" at around 7.30am that morning.

The post is now full of comments from residents around Nottingham claiming to have heard the "crazy" noise. Further intrigue surrounding the noise came when people began to realise that it wasn't just heard in Clifton.

Residents in West Bridgford, The Meadows and Wilford all say that they heard a thud.

72-year-old Brian Parker, who lives close to Clifton centre, said: "I heard it but I didn't know what it was. I thought from my army days it sounded like a bang, sort of like an explosion - that's what it sounded like to me.

"I just shrugged off after I heard it. I think it was about 7 or 8am. It reminded me of something like a shot from a shotgun - but it can't have been that!

"It gave me a bit of fright as it sounded like it was quite close by I think, it can't have been far away. I just closed the windows after that.

"It's funny talking about it now, I thought I was going mad!"

Phil Sanders also lives in Clifton. The 71-year-old said: "Oh yes I heard it yesterday morning. It was definitely a bang and then some sort of loud thud.

"I can't remember what time, I suppose it could have been around 8.30 in the morning. I've heard noises like that all the time before in the area where I live.

"We heard it and the wife was like 'what was that?' It wasn't like an explosion, it was something I'd heard before, although it was a bit louder than usual. That's probably why so many people are talking about it. I think it was from the power station.

"There's a lot going on there and we can usually here stuff going off. It happens every now and again. It sounded like it came from a long way away."

Paul Broughton, 72, is retired. He said: "My wife was the one that heard it. She said it was a very loud bang. She was surprised I hadn't heard it. A few neighbours around the place said the same thing.

"My wife was saying it was like some kind of explosion."
