Mystery 'ominous' cloud formation leaves police puzzled as tsunami fog spotted

Police officers were left puzzled after spotting an "ominous" cloud formation near Bristol.

The South West division of the National Police Air Service spotted a very low lying cloud formation while assisting Avon and Somerset Police on Wednesday (April 13). The video shows clouds that appear to be very flat and long, stretching out in a straight line in the sky.

Sharing their discovery on Twitter, the NPAS questioned how the streak of cloud could have happened. The tweet said: "Out assisting @ASPolice [Avon and Somerset Police] and saw this streak of cloud? How did that happen?"

Twitter user @Ejay95087130 commented to say they looked "slightly ominous" whereas @Littlun007 questioned whether they were gravity wave clouds. These types of clouds occur when a gravity wave moves vertically through a stable layer of the atmosphere.

Elsewhere in the West Country, not everyone was fortunate with blue skies for the Easter weekend. Low cloud and fog was spotted moving across Dawlish Beach in south Devon on Good Friday.

Along the coast in Plymouth, a tsunami of fog was captured on camera showing the breath taking weather phenomenon. It occurs when condensation from warm air merges with cool seawater, creating the dramatic effect of a thick blanket of cloud that can move quickly.
