Mystery of village Christmas tree that was replaced by a traffic cone

People living in one Merseyside town have been left confused after their 'lifelong' Christmas tree disappeared.

The tree in Crosby Village drew criticism after the Christmas light switch-on in November, due to it being smaller than those of previous years.

Many people expressed their disappointment on social media, but those behind the tree said it would get bigger as the years go on.

Back in December, Victoria ward councillor Michael Roche explained the reason the tree is small is that it is a living tree, which will be in the village for generations to come

He said: "We already have offers from children's organisations and schools to decorate the tree for the various occasions of the year such as Easter, Remembrance Sunday, Chinese New Year.

"Although there was a lot of negativity posted on social media, when people have realised the intention and that it is a living tree, then responses have been very, very positive.

"One said next year they'll be moaning that it is too big."

Now some want to know why the tree has vanished from the square, with nothing but a pile of pallets and cones in its place.

Matt Andrews, who lives in Waterloo but often visits Crosby Village, said: "It's a bit silly isn't it?

"What's left behind is an eyesore, right in the middle of the square. I just don't understand why a 'lifelong' tree has been moved already."

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: "As we have previously stated, our intention was to relocate the current tree from its temporary site.

"A new living tree will be planted within Crosby village in the near future once a permanent location is agreed upon by various parties.

"By choosing living trees, this is part of a long term sustainability plan to ensure each area has a Christmas tree for the future and they will thrive under the watchful eye of the communities they support."

A council tweet said the tree has been moved to South Park in Bootle.
